A Japanese engineering resins company claims it has developed technology to help bond incompatible resins for double-molding technology.

Polyplastics Co. Ltd. says its Aki-Lock uses laser processing of the surface of the primary molded part prior to secondary molding. The primary molded part is glass-fiber reinforced and a fiber layer is exposed by the laser. The fiber strongly bonds the secondary molded material to produce an air-tight bond, according to the company.

The Tokyo firm says the technology can reduce the cost of multi-functional molded systems and reduce assembly time. Polyplastics is a joint venture of Daicel Corp. and Ticona.
